Horse & Pony Trekking

Horse and pony trekking appropriate for all experience levels

The horse and pony trekking we offer here at Cannock Chase Trekking Centre is the heart of what we do. We just love to be able to share with our clients the amazing experience of spending time on horseback whilst appreciating the stunning scenery of Cannock Chase, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty here in Staffordshire. Whilst the magnificent views of Cannock Chase are a tonic for the soul in themselves, those views are further improved (if that could be possible) when seen through the ears of a faithful steed (we think so, at least!).

Lisa and the team at Cannock Chase Trekking Centre offer expert tuition delivered in a fun and relaxing way, enabling you to learn to horse ride or to improve your existing horse riding skills whilst enjoying serene saddle-top views of the wildlife as you trek on horseback through the breathtakingly beautiful forests and heathlands of Cannock Chase.

If you mostly ride in an arena, it’s a whole different experience to get out in the countryside and the wide open spaces, where you can truly appreciate what horsemanship is all about.

We have a selection of off-road trail rides to suit all abilities, whether you are an experienced rider or have never sat on a horse or pony before; please see below for more information on the horse and pony treks we offer. If you aren’t sure which trail ride is suitable for you, please refer to our FAQs as well as the information below.

Cannock Chase Trekking Centre has an extensive selection of horses and ponies, so we are able to find a suitable mount for riders of all ages (from age 7 upwards on our treks) and abilities.

Please refer to our full terms and conditions before booking.

Here at Cannock Chase Trekking Centre, we pride ourselves on providing an excellent experience for all our customers, whether complete beginners or experienced riders, and we strive constantly to make the customer experience a positive memorable event; our reviews and customer feedback are testimony to the ethos and values of the trekking centre.

As a result of our dedication, we have been awarded a coveted Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence for 2021.

The prices per person for each of our treks are given in the details below. However, we do have a very special offer for our regular riders to make use of. A ride card may be purchased from reception for £400pp, which offers six 2-hour treks for the price of five! Each ride card is valid for six months from the purchase date.

Paddock/Arena Pony Rides

Half-hour lead-rein pony ride around our grounds, suitable for children aged 4 to 7 who want to try horse riding for the first time, as well as for children with a little experience. On days when the weather is bad, these will take place in our covered arena.

Sundays @ 2.45 & 3.20pm for 30 minutes
£25pp
(Age 4 to 7 years)

One-Hour Introductory Horse/Pony Trek

Perfect for our younger riders, first time riders and those looking to get back into horse riding after a break. This horse/pony trek will involve riding at a walk and trot, with the amount of trotting depending on the group’s ability on the day.

Wednesday to Sunday @ 12.00pm for 1 hour
£45pp
(Minimum age 7 years)

Two-Hour Mixed-Ability Horse/Pony Trek

This longer trekking experience caters for all abilities from beginners to more experienced riders. The trek allows complete beginners to find their feet and learn how to walk and trot, whilst our more experienced horse riders will split off from the group part way through the ride to canter. This horse/pony trek is extremely popular with groups, and it allows those who have taken a break from horse riding to get back into the rhythm and the joys of being on horseback. Please note that while this trek does cater for beginners it is a more upbeat pace ride than our 1 hour introductory trek and does include trotting (full instruction is given) so riders do need a degree of fitness to participate.

Wednesday to Sunday @ 1.30pm for 2 hours
£80pp
(Minimum age 10 years)

Two-Hour Experienced Horse/Pony Trek

This trek caters for experienced riders who are comfortable and confident at walk, trot and canter in open spaces, ride on a regular basis and who have a reasonable level of fitness. It often covers more varied and challenging terrain, and it’s a great way for experienced horse riders to see a bit more of Cannock Chase. The pace of the trek is dependent on weather and ground conditions, and it takes into account the skills of the horse riders in the group on any given ride, as we try to ensure that the least-strong rider in the group is comfortable.

Because of this, we respectfully request that you’re realistic as to whether you have the skills, experience and fitness for this ride, for your own benefit and that of others in the group; we really want everyone to have a good time and not feel out of their depth! If you are unsure, please consider a mixed-ability ride as your first experience of horse trekking with us.

Wednesday to Sunday @ 9.30 am for 2 hours
£80pp

(Minimum age 10 years, but this is subject to the skills and experience of the rider. Children who have not ridden with us before may be asked to come along on the mixed ability trek first)
